- Cet article propose d’examiner la façon dont notre rapport au romantisme britannique a été influencé par les débats académiques des dernières décennies. Il est le fruit d’une recherche portant sur la construction de l’autorité littéraire et culturelle à l’époque romantique. La communauté dans laquelle je m’inscris lorsque je parle de « notre rapport au romantisme » est celle des personnes qui étudient la littérature en ce début du 21e siècle : enseignants, étudiants, critiques et chercheurs.

12 Angry Men / Douze hommes en colère (Sidney Lumet - 1957)

- En 1957 sort 12 Angry Men, premier film de Sidney Lumet, qui connait un succès commercial très modeste, mais remporte l'Ours d'or au festival de Berlin, le prix spécial à Locarno, est nommé aux Oscars, et voit Henri Fonda remporter le prix du meilleur acteur aux British Awards. Il s'agit d'un "film de procès", genre qui a donné de grands classiques, de The Paradine case (Le procès Paradine, 1947) d'Alfred Hitchcock, à Anatomy of a Murder (Autopsie d'un meurtre, 1959) d'Otto Preminger, en passant par Witness for the Prosecution (Témoin à charge, 1957) de Billy Wilder. Mais alors que tous ces films se concentrent sur les débats, le défilé des témoins et les plaidoiries, jusqu'au suspense du verdict, 12 Angry Men se déroule entièrement en salle de délibération. C'est donc un huis clos, pari de mise en scène intéressant.

I do not think this is any more true of artists and writers than it is of anybody whether they be doctor, lawyer, used car salesman, fishmonger, politician, farmer, priest, housewife or any of the other hundreds of thousands of jobs that exist.

Cette contribution interroge l'héritage thatchérien dans le domaine syndical à partir du débat autour du processus dit de « modernisation » des syndicats. Elle examine les différentes stratégies poursuivies par les syndicats britanniques face au contexte produit par les politiques conservatrices, et s'emploie à mesurer les effets qu'elles ont eus sur les pratiques du mouvement syndical. Du syndicalisme managérial au syndicalisme de mouvement social en passant par le syndicalisme activiste, l'image que les syndicats cherchent à donner d'eux-mêmes tout autant que leur répertoire d'action ont été redéfinis par trente années d'expérimentation.

A much debated topic has been the fundamental thrust of the New Labour project. Was it about the modernisation of social democracy or its abandonment? Did it adapt itself to the settlement bequeathed by Thatcherism and the neo-liberal paradigm it entrenched or seek it transcend it? This article discusses these contending interpretations focusing on the issue of public service reform, which lay at the heart of New Labour's domestic programme. It then explores the effects of New Labour's market-oriented 'modernisation' strategy on what social democrats have traditionally regarded as the normative underpinning of the public services, the 'public service ethos'.

- This essay will look at the ways in which the ethics of the BBC have been manifested, compromised and disputed by drawing upon particular instances of crisis, both in its endorsement of certain popular culture personalities in its programming, and in its BBC News coverage of international events such as the Iraq war and the Arab-Israeli conflict. We shall see the controversy that has surrounded the BBC in recent times and investigate the various debates on public morality, journalistic integrity and cultural sensitivity that have ensued.
