Justice Department settles Parkland school shooting civil cases for $127.5 million

The Department of Justice has settled over 40 civil cases that arose following the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. All cases have been resolved for a total of $127.5 million, according to a statement released Wednesday.
"The settlement does not amount to an admission of fault by the United States," the DOJ said in the statement.
The payments mark the end of multiple civil cases filed against the U.S. government for damages following the Parkland shooting.

Federal officials have confirmed that the US Department of Justice has reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the families of most of those killed or wounded in the 2018 Florida high school massacre, over the FBI’s failure to stop the gunman even though it had received information he intended to attack.
Attorneys for 16 of the 17 killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland and some of those wounded previously announced in November that they had reached a monetary settlement with the government over the FBI’s failure to investigate a tip it received about a month before the massacre. The 17th family chose not to sue.

On February 14th, 2018, a gunman stole the lives of 14 students and 3 educators at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It was the deadliest high school shooting in a nation with far too many of them, and it left another community — and our country — shattered by grief.

Today, the Department of Justice announced that it has settled the 40 civil cases arising out of the February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
This settlement resolves all of the cases for $127.5 million. The settlement does not amount to an admission of fault by the United States. The parties have been in litigation since late 2018, when the survivors of the shooting, and the families of 16 people killed, sued the government for damages.
