13 January 2020 - Harry and Meghan to step back as 'senior royals'
Harry and Meghan seek global trademark for 'Sussex Royal' brand
Ben Quinn (The Guardian, 12/01/2020)
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are seeking to register the “Sussex Royal” brand as a global trademark for a range of items and activities including clothing, stationery and the running of “emotional support groups”, international filings suggest.
The application covering Australia, Canada, the EU and US was filed in December with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the name of their new foundation, according to details online.
As well as the application to register Sussex Royal – which the couple have been using on their Instagram account and on a website launched last week as they announced they were “stepping back” as senior royals – one was also made to register “Sussex Royal the Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Flush
Rebecca Mead (The New Yorker, 10/01/2020)
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been clear about their unhappiness with the constraints of their roles—traditional, familial, media-related—since their romance was first made public.
Three weeks ago, a petition was submitted to the city council of Brighton and Hove, in the county of Sussex, calling for the rejection of the terms “Duke and Duchess of Sussex.” The petition, started by a resident named Charles Ross, characterized the use of these titles by Prince Harry, the second son of the heir to the throne, and his wife, Meghan Markle, as “morally wrong and disrespectful to the county of East Sussex.” It called upon the council members “to not refer to these individuals by such titles which we believe to be entirely non democratic and symbolic of the oppression of the general public by the wealthy elite” and demanded that the council not invite or entertain the couple, “nor afford them any hospitality or courtesies above and beyond that of an ordinary member of the public.”
Why does Meghan get all the blame?
Peggy Drexler (CNN, 12/01/2020)*
Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, have announced they're stepping back from — and essentially quitting — their roles as senior members of the royal family. As part of that move, they'll spend some of their time in North America and "work to become financially independent." Who knew that was even an option?
Queen Elizabeth has yet to give the couple her blessing, CNN understands. Still, in a statement that the couple released on their Instagram, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex assured the world they would continue "to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."
It's not a real f**king job anyway, says Harry
(The Daily Mash, 09/01/2020)
Prince Harry has explained that it does not matter that he is stepping back as a senior Royal because it is not a real f**king job in any sense.
The Duke of Sussex, which is also not a real job, told Britain that it will not even notice his departure because whether anyone is performing his role or not makes absolutely no difference.
