Senate GOP unveils new health care bill

The Senate unveiled its plan to repeal and replace ObamaCare on Thursday, a bill that would cut Medicaid, eliminate penalties for people who don’t buy insurance and cut tax hikes enacted to pay for the Affordable Healthcare Act’s expanded care.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate had to act because Obamacare was on the verge of collapse.
“Because Obamacare isn’t working by nearly any measure, it is failed,” he said on the Senate floor.

Repealing Obamacare
What’s in the Senate healthcare bill

Senate Republican leaders on Thursday morning released a draft of their ObamaCare repeal-and-replace bill; now the quest to secure 51 votes begins.
It won’t be an easy task, and it’s likely some of the details will have to be tweaked to win over conservative or centrist members.

Reactions
We should be worried sick about what the Republicans' Obamacare repeal bill will do to Americans
Opinion (The Los Angeles Times, 23/06/2017)
To the editor: Thank you for drawing much-needed attention to the frightening speed and heartlessness with which Senate Republicans are dismantling the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act along with Medicaid. (“GOP's secret Trumpcare bill will impact a sixth of the U.S. economy. What could possibly go wrong?” editorial, June 21)
I am sick with worry about the suffering this will cause — for people with preexisting conditions, for the 24 million who have gotten much-needed coverage through expanded Medicaid, for middle-class families with elderly parents in nursing homes, and for those of us on employer plans who will see our coverage decrease and lifetime spending caps imposed.

"Get A Job"
Kellyanne Conway Defends Medicaid Cuts, Says Adults Can Always Find Jobs
Jonathan Cohn (The Huffington Post, 25/06/2017)
Jonathan Cohn (The Huffington Post, 25/06/2017)
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Sunday came right out and said what so many Republicans are probably thinking ― that taking Medicaid away from able-bodied adults is no big deal, because they can go out and find jobs that provide health insurance.
Apparently nobody has told Conway that the majority of able-bodied adults on Medicaid already have jobs. The problem is that they work as parking lot attendants and child care workers, manicurists and dishwashers ― in other words, low-paying jobs that typically don’t offer insurance. Take away their Medicaid and they won’t be covered.
Appearing on ABC “This Week” program, Conway faced tough questions about steep cuts to Medicaid in the Better Health Care Act ― the bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act that Senate Republican leaders released on Thursday and hope to bring to a vote this week.
