Emmys 2017: The Handmaid's Tale makes history on politically charged night
Lanre Bakare (The Guardian, 18/09/2017)
The Handmaid’s Tale gave Hulu its first ever best drama win at the Emmys on a night where new shows had the edge over old favorites, and political barbs – mostly aimed at Donald Trump – punctuated proceedings.
Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian novel fought off competition from other front-runners including The Crown, Stranger Things and This Is Us to make history by becoming the first show produced by a streaming site to take the evening’s most-coveted award.
Politics were at the forefront at an evening, which featured a surprise appearance from former White House press secretary Sean Spicer. Host Stephen Colbert set the tone with an opening monologue, that repeatedly made fun of the president’s long-running annoyance over not winning an Emmy during his time hosting The Apprentice.

Best Drama Series

‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ Politics and ‘S.N.L.’ Dominate the Emmys
John Koblin (The New York Times, 18/09/2017)
It was inevitable that a streaming service would win an Emmy for best drama at some point. But no one expected Hulu to get there first.
Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” won TV’s most prestigious prize here on Sunday night at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, beating out competitors from HBO, NBC and Netflix.

Political Satire

'Veep' and 'The Handmaid's Tale' reign supreme on historic Emmy night full of Trump rebuke
Peter Sblendorio (New York Daily News, 18/09/2017)
At an Emmys ceremony where TV shows centering on political satire and a dystopian future were the biggest winners, the progress of real-life society played a breakout role.
Multiple nominees of color made history Sunday, while “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a bleak drama about a male-dominated society, and “Veep,” a comedy about corrupt and inept politicians and the people who surround them, took home the night’s biggest prizes.
HBO’s “Veep” won outstanding comedy series for a third-straight year, while “The Handmaid’s Tale” beat out a crowded field to win outstanding drama series in the first-ever major Emmy win for online streaming service Hulu. The lead actresses in those shows each made history, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Veep” winning her sixth Emmy for the same role, and “The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Elisabeth Moss earning her first in nine nominations.

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert: A smooth Emmy host while roughing up Trump
Frazier Moore (The Washington Post, 18/09/2017)

If President Donald Trump’s ears have been burning thanks to late-night TV, especially “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” they must have positively sizzled Sunday as Colbert hosted the Emmy Awards.
Colbert has boosted his own show’s ratings in the Trump Era by keeping the president in his comic cross-hairs. The choice of Colbert to host this year’s Emmycast instantly sparked speculation: How far would he lead this annual ceremony of accolades into Trump mockery?
The answer: Farther into politics than any Emmy show in memory. And appropriately far to reflect the unrest since last November’s election. Where previous hosts have kept their monologues solidly in the realm of television, Colbert never strayed far from the political realm.
