The hosts of the Oscars are to hold emergency talks to consider the future role of film mogul Harvey Weinstein following claims of sexual misconduct.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the allegations of sexual assault against Weinstein were "repugnant".
Bafta, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, has already suspended his membership.

When Gwyneth Paltrow was 22 years old, she got a role that would take her from actress to star: The film producer Harvey Weinstein hired her for the lead in the Jane Austen adaptation “Emma.” Before shooting began, he summoned her to his suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for a work meeting that began uneventfully.
It ended with Mr. Weinstein placing his hands on her and suggesting they head to the bedroom for massages, she said.
“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” she said in an interview, publicly disclosing that she was sexually harassed by the man who ignited her career and later helped her win an Academy Award.

In the world of sex abuse litigation, some things change and some things never do. Bill Cosby allegedly used Quaaludes and a famous television show to lure young women to his "casting couch." Harvey Weinstein allegedly used his shower and his aphrodisiac and drug of choice: the promise of Hollywood movie fame. Both men, however, were united in their choice of protective legal shields: the court-sanctioned use of secret nondisclosure settlement agreements (NDAs), which prevented future victims from learning about previous accusations made against the media moguls.
Enforcement of criminal, employment and civil rights laws should be sending a strong message that improper and illegal behavior involving acts of sexual abuse will not be tolerated in a civilized society. And while there are plenty of laws currently on the books to that effect, change has been slower than it should be in this area. The message that these laws provide severe penalties and redress for victims has not been effectively communicated, in part, because NDAs shield the public from the details of negotiated settlements.

If you have ever experienced sexual assault or harassment, you know that one of the cruellest things about these acts is the way that they entangle, and attempt to contaminate, all of the best things about you. If you’re sweet and friendly, you’ll think that it’s your fault for accommodating the situation. If you’re tough, well, you might as well decide that it’s no big deal. If you’re a gentle person, then he knew you were weak. If you’re talented, he thought of you as an equal. If you’re ambitious, you wanted it. If you’re savvy, you knew it was coming. If you’re affectionate, you seemed like you were asking for it all along. If you make dirty jokes or have a good time at parties, then why get moralistic? If you’re smart, there’s got to be some way to rationalize this.
When you are a young woman, and you believe in your own worth and personhood and agency, it can be hard, despite the clichés that govern this situation, to understand that an older man who takes an interest in you does not necessarily share these beliefs. And, of course, young women are not the only victims of such crimes. But this is a basic and familiar pattern: a powerful man sees you, a woman who is young and who thinks she might be talented, a person who conveniently exists in a female body, and he understands that he can tie your potential to your female body, and threaten the latter, and you will never be quite as sure of the former again.
