The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a third child, Kensington Palace has announced.
The announcement was made as the duchess was forced to cancel an engagement on Monday because of extreme morning sickness, or hyperemesis gravidarum.
In a statement, Kensington Palace said: “Their royal highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child. The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.

Just what impact will a third child have on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? While the royal couple will have plenty of help to hand, the new arrival will inevitably change the family dynamic as our three writers - each with three children - explain.
William and Kate inhabit a very different world from my own, yet I'm pretty sure that they'll soon discover that when it comes to children-even heirs to a throne-three isn't a crowd. With two the dynamics is so predictable it's almost like it's set in stone. They either gang up against you or try and force you to take sides; which leads to all sorts of stand-offs, melt-downs, tantrums, groundings, door-slamming and monumental huffing-and that's just from me!

The news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to have a third child won't just delight the happy parents. It will also please all British monarchists (of which I am one). The direct succession of the royal family is now thoroughly secured.
The rule of thumb for the monarchy -- and aristocratic families -- was to produce an heir and a spare.
That meant two sons traditionally -- although it is the case in the royal family that daughters of the monarch, or the heir apparent's oldest son (i.e Prince William), inherit ahead of their uncles, or their male cousins. So the new baby will automatically become fifth in line to the throne.
