Donald Trump confirms US will quit Paris climate agreement
Oliver Milman, David Smith and Damian Carrington (The Guardian, 01/06/2017)
Donald Trump has confirmed that he will withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement, in effect ensuring the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gases will quit the international effort to address dangerous global warming.
The US will remove itself from the deal, joining Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries not party to the Paris agreement. There will be no penalty for leaving, with the Paris deal based upon the premise of voluntary emissions reductions by participating countries.
“In order to fulfil my solemn duty to the United States and its citizens, the US will withdraw from the Paris climate accord, but begin negotiations to re-enter either the Paris accords or a really entirely new transaction, on terms that are fair to the United States,” the US president told press in the White House rose garden on Thursday.

It was described by former US President Barack Obama as "a turning point for our planet."
A landmark deal, ratified by 147 parties or countries, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change was aimed at cutting emissions and keeping global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
But the future of 2015 accord now hangs in the balance after US President Donald Trump announced Thursday he would withdraw from the agreement.

Somini Sengupta, Melissa Eddy and Chris Buckley (The New York Times, 01/06/2017)
Leaders from around the world maintained a defiant front on Thursday after President Trump announced that he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in English before switching to French, said he believed Mr. Trump was making a mistake. He then extended an offer to Americans:
“Tonight, I wish to tell the United States: France believes in you, the world believes in you. I know that you are a great nation. I know your history, our common history. To all scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, responsible citizens who were disappointed by the decision of the president of the United States, I want to say that they will find in France a second home.”
