Sean Penn and ‘El Chapo’: What We Know

Liam Stack (The New York Times, 10/01/2016)

The actor Sean Penn met with Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo,” in a jungle hide-out in October, according to an article Mr. Penn wrote for Rolling Stone magazine that was published Saturday night.
Mr. Guzmán escaped from prison in July and was on the run when he met with Mr. Penn. The drug kingpin was arrested Friday, and the authorities have suggested there was a connection between his capture and his meeting with the actor.

Secret meeting

Here’s what Sean Penn agreed to do to party with El Chapo
Laura Italiano (The New York Post, 09/01/2016)
Hollywood blowhard Sean Penn secretly met, interviewed, and posed for grip-and-smirk selfies with murderous druglord Joaquin Guzman Loera — even as the world’s most-wanted fugitive continued to elude authorities in the months after tunneling out of a Mexican prison.
“I don’t want to be portrayed as a nun,” El Chapo says in the interview. Nevertheless, to gain access to the kingpin’s secret jungle hideout, Penn agreed that Guzman would have the final edit of the resulting story.
Penn also agreed not to alert authorities to the killer’s whereabouts. Still, Guzman’s capture in a dramatic police shootout Friday came as a direct result of Mexican officials tracking their contacts, authorities there said.

It was conducted in October in the Mexican jungle after Guzman's jail break, and published by Rolling Stone.
A White House spokesman said the Hollywood actor's "so-called interview" was "maddening", while Republican Marco Rubio said it was "grotesque".

Back in prison

Did Sean Penn inadvertently have a hand in El Chapo's recapture?
Rory Carroll (The Guardian, 10/01/2016)
It sounds like a scene from a Hollywood film: an actor-turned activist sits in a jungle clearing interviewing the world’s most wanted drug lord, a notorious fugitive who after two decades on the run decides the time has come to tell his life story.
An implausible plot, except it is true: Sean Penn interviewed Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in a remote part of Mexico’s Durango state last October amid a huge manhunt involving US and Mexican intelligence agencies and security forces.
The actor revealed the encounter in an article in Rolling Stone magazine published on Saturday, just a day after Mexican authorities nabbed Guzmán in the Pacific town of Los Mochis – a capture to which Penn may have inadvertently contributed.
