Scotland first in UK to offer HIV prevention drug PrEP on NHS(Sky News, 10/04/2017)
The drug, PrEP, has been approved by the Scottish Medicine Consortium (SMC) and has been shown to reduce the risk of infection in people who are high risk by more than 90%.
Campaigners who had fought for the drug to be made available welcomed the decision, saying Scotland had "made history".
They say PrEP is a "vital opportunity" to reduce the number of new HIV cases.
Putting Pressure on England
Sarah Boseley (The Guardian, 10/04/2017)
In a major victory for campaigners, the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) said pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) would be free on the NHS to those who need it because they were at risk – for instance, if they have a partner with HIV. Access to the drugs could begin within weeks.
NHS England resisted rolling out PrEP due to its cost, although it is a lot cheaper than a lifetime of HIV treatment which could cost £360,000. It lost to campaigners in the high court and then the court of appeal, but those who want to take PrEP have been told they must wait for a big new trial to answer “significant outstanding implementation questions”.
Fiona Keating (The International Business Times, 10/04/2017)
Scotland is to become the first country in the UK to offer the revolutionary HIV prevention drug pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), after the Scottish Medicines Consortium approved its use.
The treatment has shown to lower the risk of infection by 86%, extending to 90% for high risk patients.
People at risk, such as those who have a partner with HIV, can have access to PrEP, which would be free on the NHS.
Cancer Drug Also Approved
(BBC News, 10/04/2017)
A breast cancer drug which is being withdrawn in England because it is too expensive is being made available on the NHS in Scotland.
Kadcyla is used to treat an aggressive, advanced type of breast cancer known as HER2 positive.
The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) said the drug would enable patients to spend "more time with their families and in some cases return to work".
