Hurricane Matthew kills 269; tears through Haiti, Bahamas, Cuba
Max Blau, Holly Yan, Patrick Oppmann and Ben Westcott (CNN, 07/10/2016)
Hurricane Matthew pounded the Bahamas on Thursday on its way to the United States, after leaving behind a humanitarian crisis in Haiti.
At least 269 people have been killed so far in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said, with the death toll expected to rise.
Haiti, still recovering from the catastrophic 2010 earthquake which killed hundreds of thousands, was hit hardest with more than 264 people reported dead as of Thursday evening, local time.

Strongest storm in a decade
Hurricane Matthew, now a Category 3 storm, approaches Florida; emergencies declared in three states

The strongest storm system to threaten the United States in a decade roared toward Florida on Thursday, forcing thousands from their homes and prompting dire warnings from forecasters and public officials alike.
Floridians hunkered down Thursday as pelting rain and punishing wind began to pummel the state, the first sting of a deadly hurricane expected to grind its way up the coast overnight and through most of the day Friday.
Gov. Rick Scott (R) repeatedly pleaded with residents to take the storm seriously, urging the 1.5 million Floridians in evacuation zones to leave and describing Hurricane Matthew in increasingly blunt terms as he tried to describe the peril.

Hurricane Matthew Approaches Florida; Governor Urges 1.5 Million to Flee
(The New York Times, 07/10/2016)
Hurricane Matthew weakened early Friday, becoming a Category 3 storm with winds of about 120 miles per hour. But officials said it remained “extremely dangerous” as it neared Central Florida’s Atlantic coast. The storm was blamed for the deaths of more than 280 people in Haiti.
“Extremely dangerous, life-threatening weather conditions are forecast in the next 24 hours,” the National Weather Service warned Thursday afternoon. “Airborne debris lofted by extreme winds will be capable of breaching structures, unprotected windows and vehicles.”

Doubting the severity of the storm
Drudge Report’s playing down and politicizing of Hurricane Matthew was ‘deplorable’
Jason Samenow (The Washington Post, 07/10/2016)
Late Thursday afternoon, monstrous Hurricane Matthew was just hours away from a likely devastating impact with Florida. It was a time when meteorologists, emergency managers and politicians of all persuasions were joining to deliver a simple, clear message in the spirit of keeping people safe: Take this storm seriously, and prepare.
Yet the popular Drudge Report website, visited by a massive audience, including vulnerable Floridians, was casting doubt on the severity of the Category 4 storm. In big, bold all-capital letters, it said the storm was “ragged” and suggested it could be fizzling. It made this proclamation at the same time the National Hurricane Center was calling for “potentially disastrous impacts” in Florida.
