NY gov.: 2 convicted murderers used power tools to escape

DANNEMORA, N.Y. — Two convicted murderers used power tools to cut through steel pipes at a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border and escape through a manhole, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.
"It was an elaborate plot," Cuomo said after joining law enforcement authorities to retrace the prisoners' escape route from the Clinton Correctional Facility in the town of Dannemora in the Adirondacks.
He said Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, are "two dangerous individuals."
Sweat is serving a sentence of life without parole after he was convicted of first-degree murder for killing a Broome County sheriff's deputy in 2002. Matt is serving a sentence of 25 years to life for the kidnapping and beating death of a man in 1997.
The two men's adjoining cells were empty during a morning check, said Anthony Annuci, the acting state corrections commissioner.

Authorities were investigating how the inmates obtained the power tools they used in the breakout over the weekend.
"It was sophisticated plan," Cuomo said. "It took a period of time, no doubt, to execute."
To escape, the inmates had to cut into a steam pipe then shimmy "some distance," Cuomo said, before cutting themselves out again. Their alleged path conjured images of "The Shawshank Redemption," the 1994 film adaptation of a Stephen King story about an inmate's carefully planned prison escape.

"These are killers. They are murderers," the governor said. "There's never been a question about the crimes they committed. They are now on the loose, and our first order of business is apprehending them."
Officials gave no details on how the men managed to avoid detection while cutting their way out. "They had to be heard," Cuomo told ABC's "Good Morning America."
After the search is over, "we'll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again," Cuomo said later.
Authorities set up roadblocks and brought in bloodhounds and helicopters. Hundreds of law enforcement officers fanned out around the prison, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, following up on dozens of tips.

Taunting
Staff (The Mirror)
Two convicted murderers escaped a maximum security prison by using power tools to cut through steel pipes - then left their pursuers a cheeky note.
Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, cut through the back of their cells and escaped through underground tunnels in scenes similar to hit film Shawshank Redemption.
The fugitive pair - described as "two dangerous individuals" - then left a message with a smiley face in a crude racial caricature style and the words: "Have a nice day!"
