The prime minister of Greenland pushed back Sunday against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that America will take control of the island territory. US Vice-President JD Vance is set to visit the US military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland on Friday. However, an earlier plan for his wife Usha to visit a popular dog-sled race was called off amid local protests.

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, arrived in Greenland on Friday, embarking on a scaled-back trip that included a stop at the US-operated Pituffik Space Base on the island's northwest coast. But even before the US delegation arrived, they were met with broad opposition to Trump's annexation plans. Here's why the United States has shown so much interest in Greenland amid the territory's own push for independence.
