Biden issues emergency declaration for Mississippi after tornado kills dozens

President Joe Biden early Sunday issued an emergency declaration for Mississippi, making federal funding available to Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe and Sharkey counties, the areas hardest hit Friday night by a deadly tornado that ripped through the Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest regions of the U.S.

CBS News has confirmed at least 26 people were killed in Mississippi and Alabama as the massive storm ripped through several towns on its hour-long path. Dozens others were injured.

Tornado strikes Rolling Fork, Anguilla leaving damage to homes, injured people

A tornado hit Rolling Fork and several other towns in the South Delta Friday night, leaving a path of destruction, injuries and at least one person dead in its wake.  Christopher Rainer, with the National Weather Service office in Jackson, verified that Rolling Fork took a direct hit and that there was structural damage.

Late Friday night, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office reported one person had been killed in Silver City, which is located 30 miles northwest of Rolling Fork and was also hit by the tornado. The person was identified as an adult male, but their name was not released.

The tornado that pummeled through west-central Mississippi on Friday was large, destructive — and exceptionally rare. It caused at least 25 deaths in the state along a path of 59.4 miles, according to post-disaster surveys by the National Weather Service (NWS).
