Three Irish observatories take steps towards becoming Unesco world heritage sites

Three observatories across the island of Ireland that have played key roles in astronomical and scientific discoveries have taken the first steps towards receiving international recognition as world heritage sites. The Historical Observatories of Ireland, which include Dunsink Observatory in Co Dublin, Birr Castle Demesne in Co Offaly and Armagh Observatory in Co Armagh, have been added to Ireland’s tentative list of properties seeking Unesco world heritage site status.

Three of Ireland’s most prominent astronomical sites will be put forward for world heritage site status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, known as Unesco. Birr Observatory in Co Offaly, Dunsink Observatory in Dublin and the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium are part of a cross-Border plan to highlight the country’s legacy in astronomy.

The Minister for Heritage has announced that the Historic Astronomical Observatories of Ireland have been added to the World Heritage Tentative List, in a bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sites comprise Dunsink Observatory House in Dublin, Birr Castle and Demesne in Co Offaly and Armagh Planetarium and Observatory.
