New laws banning menthol cigarettes and demanding individual warnings kick in

New smoking laws requiring tobacco companies to print health warnings on every single cigarette they produce for sale in Australia have come into effect.  Today's changes also mean there will be updated health warnings printed on cigarette packets, which will also have inserts with information about how to quit smoking. And a phased ban on menthol cigarettes will also kick in today.

'Cannot be avoided': Grim warnings to be printed on every cigarette from today

Australia will become the second country in the world after Canada to print grim warnings on every single cigarette. The move is one of a raft of new laws surrounding smoking and vaping starting today. Cancer Council and Quit backed the move, saying the phrases convey the dangers of the habit "in a manner that cannot be avoided".

Menthol cigarettes: The FDA's proposed ban and why they’re more harmful

Cigarette smoking has been on the decline for years. But menthol cigarettes are one segment of the tobacco market that has remained strong. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed new rules today to prohibit these products and flavored cigars. These proposed rules are in response to public health concerns about the dangers of menthol cigarettes and their huge popularity among young people and Black, Hispanic and Asian American smokers. We spoke with Jennifer Cofer, director of the EndTobacco® Program at MD Anderson, about the harms posed by menthol cigarettes and why the FDA's decision matters.
