On 29th May 2009, the London-based writer Will Self came to Lyon to take part in the Villa Gillet's "Assises Internationales du Roman". He was to give a talk on his perspectives on the works of the influential French writer, Louis Ferdinand Céline, but before he did so I managed to catch up with him to ask a few questions about his interests, influences and views on modern fiction.

Will Self is an icon of fin du siècle Britain tearing up the Establishment and questioning the psychic decay of the individual in modern British society. His status as a prolific journalist, recovering heroin addict, psychogeographer, philosopher, art critic and novelist ensure his works maintain an edgy significance in their relentless satire on modern-day Britain. Watch the interview to gain a glimpse of this fascinating harbinger of the British Zeitgeist.

Quote

"I think of writing as a sculptural medium. You are not building things. You are removing things, chipping away at language to reveal a living form." (Will Self)
