The Government is powerless to stop a new phase of Romanian and Bulgarian immigration which is expected to begin on New Year’s Day, the immigration minister warned on Wednesday night.Mark Harper said even the British courts would over-rule any measures to extend restrictions placed on citizens of the two former Communist countries when they joined the European Union six years ago.
The minister pledged, however, that Romanian and Bulgarian immigration will be on a far lower scale than when Poland and seven other eastern European countries joined the EU in 2004.
