US election 2012: the US political playing field tilts against Republicans

By Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama was well past the winning post of 270 votes, having swept 303 compared with only 206 for his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.
While his lead in the overall popular vote may be as narrow as a single percentage point, Mr Obama's re-election is graphic proof that the plate-tectonics of American politics are shifting against the Republicans.
Non-white voters - a growing share of the total electorate - overwhelmingly supported the president. Last night's exit polls suggested that they made up 21 per cent of all voters, compared with only 10 per cent as recently as 1996.
