University of Cambridge recruits students to babysit drunken partygoers

"St John's College is recruiting students to become on-call carer volunteers to look after peers who have had one too many at this summer's balls and garden parties.

"The college, whose alumni include Prime Ministers and Nobel Prize winners, says the scheme has been oversubscribed with volunteers willing to stay sober in return for cash.

"An email sent to members of the Boat Club asked for "a couple of people on call each night, so if a drunk staggers into the Porters' Lodge, the porters can get this on-call sober person to babysit the drunk".

"The university has yet to agree a figure for each shift, however rumour among students signing up for the scheme is that they could earn up to £100 per night."
