Tom Elliott wins Ulster Unionist party leadership
Henry McDonald
"Tom Elliott became the new leader of the Ulster Unionist party last night, beating rival Basil McCrea by 643 votes to 294.
"McCrea is regarded as a liberal, while Elliott represents the rural, conservative wing of the party. Elliott tried to appeal to the UUP's traditional grassroots by stating he would not attend either a Gaelic sports match or a gay pride rally.
"The UUP has been in decline over the last decade. Ten years ago the party had ten MPs in the House of Commons, but now has none.
"The contest followed the resignation of Sir Reg Empey after the party's disastrous showing in the general election in May."
