At the entrance to a large industrial building in west London, Ben Weston, a BBC producer, stands surrounded by 90 women, members of Gareth Malone’s Military Wives Choir, chatting, laughing, kicking their heels while waiting for their spot in the rehearsal schedule.
The doors open on to a hangar-like space, where Kylie Minogue and her dancers go through a medley of hits, backed by a
10-piece band. The 50-strong BBC Concert Orchestra waits its turn to play, seated on fold-out chairs. Twenty or more technicians hover about while Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas sits, staring into space, waiting for a chance to perform after arriving late and missing his morning slot.
