"Five years ago just four out of the top ten most borrowed authors were children's writers.
"The figures, released by Public Lending Right, which monitors library borrowing, highlight Britain's love affair with trashy thrillers, celebrity biographies, American fiction and the occasional modern masterpiece.
"Frances Osborne, the wife of the Chancellor, even makes the list of the top five most borrowed non-fiction books, with The Bolter, her widely acclaimed biography of her great-grandmother Idina Sackville, the socialite."
