"David Cameron appears to have made an enemy in the House of Commons library. Its supposedly impartial staff have been known to produce research papers on the most unlikely subjects, but seldom, if ever, has one of them seemed more determined to make a point than in a curious document entitled Absence of a Prime Minister at Prime Minister's Question Time.

"It purports to be an analysis of the attendance record at PMQs of Cameron and his four predecessors. On the face of it, it shows the present Prime Minister is the worst of the lot, with an absentee rate of 20 per cent, having missed, so it states, three out of 15 PMQs.

"By contrast, Baroness Thatcher is recorded as having missed 58 out of the 752 PMQs that took place during her period in office, which equates to a rate of 7.7 per cent. Sir John Major, her successor, missed 47 out of 398 (11.8 per cent); Tony Blair 17 out of 343 (five per cent) and Gordon Brown 10 out of 85 (11.8 per cent)."
