"Union leaders meet today to consider setting strike dates for the first national rail stoppage in 16 years.
"Signallers and maintenance workers belonging to the RMT union have already voted in favour of a walkout and the union's executive committee is due to meet this afternoon to consider whether or not to call a strike.
"Railway insiders say that they expect strikes from April 1, setting the stage for a stoppage over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend."
