One-in-three visas granted wrongly
Anil DawarMore than one in three visas granted to migrant entrepreneurs should have been refused, a review found.
Immigration officers repeatedly failed to establish applicants had enough cash or double check documents, said John Vine, the chief inspector of borders and immigration. He also slammed officials for failing to predict a 1,520 per cent surge in applications which created a 9,000-strong backlog.
Alp Mehmet, of campaign group MigrationWatch, hit out at the revelations. “It sounds like officials have been giving applicants the benefit of the doubt. There is no excuse for not doing the job properly,” he said.
