Nick Clegg calls for Andrew Mitchell to explain himself

Embattled chief whip Andrew Mitchell should give a full account of his row with police at the gates of Downing Street, the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, has said.The Liberal Democrat leader's intervention came after it was reported that police logbooks showed Mitchell called officers "plebs" and swore repeatedly during the altercation.
Mitchell has denied using the word pleb, but Clegg said a full explanation was necessary.
He said: "I don't know what happened, I don't think anybody knows precisely what happened and there are rival versions being circulated in the press.
