NHS facing 'neurology time bomb'
Stephen Adams
New figures from Parkinson's UK show there will be 28 per cent more people with Parkinson's disease by 2020.
There are currently around 127,000 people with the disease, which affects muscular control, but this figure is expected to reach 162,000 by 2020, according to a projection based on the General Practice Research Database. The number suffering motor neurone disease is also set to rise by 27 per cent in the same period.
Steve Ford, chief executive of Parkinson's UK, claimed the Government had "it's head in the sand" and called for a "neurology tsar" to sort out the situation.
