Medical watchdog must ensure that doctors can speak good English, MPs say

"The Health Select Committee said it is essential that doctors can communicate properly with their patients, but it is currently not clear if the General Medical Council can insist on language testing as part of regular checks.

"The powerful group of MPs also said that the GMC, which keeps the register of doctors allowed to practise in Britain and disciplines those that break the rules, had taken too long to set up a new system of five-yearly assessments. It has already been in the pipeline for more than 10 years.

"In addition, the select committee said there was an important weakness in the plans for revalidation as they do not give enough attention to how bad doctors will be weeded out."
