Markets surge as £645bn euro bailout warns off speculators and rescues Greece
Roger Boyes and Carl Mortished
"Europe woke up to the dawn of a new era yesterday. By dint of a mammoth €750 billion (£645 billion) bailout package cobbled together in the early hours, the markets soared, the euro firmed against the US dollar and sickly Greece survived to fight another day.
"More importantly, the axis of European economic policy changed fundamentally. The fiercely independent European Central Bank (ECB), guardian of the integrity of the euro, suddenly found itself taking dictation from politicians.
"President Sarkozy of France can count himself one of the winners since the EU has come closer to realising his dream of an economic government, the cornerstone of a tightly integrated Europe."
