Landmark ruling backs larger payouts for wounded soldiers

"The Ministry of Defence is facing a substantially bigger compensation bill for wounded servicemen as a result of a ruling by three Court of Appeal judges yesterday.

"The judges said that awards for wounded personnel must address not only the individual injuries suffered in the line of duty but also the impact on their lives in the long term.

"The Royal British Legion said that the ruling was a landmark judicial victory, hinting that it could open the floodgates for higher compensation claims.

"The judgment followed the case of two servicemen who suffered serious leg injuries, one during combat in Iraq."
