Hopes of Compromise on Health care Seem to Fade for Negotiators

"Democrats have been waiting, with increasing impatience, for Senator Max Baucus and his bipartisan Gang of Six to wrap up their negotiations on a health care measure. As August wears on, there are signs that members of the group three Democrats and three Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee are starting to give up.

"At a town hall meeting, Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, arguably the most liberal of the Democrats in the group, said he would back the use of a procedural tactic called reconciliation that would allow Senate leaders to move a health bill forward with a simple majority, instead of 60 votes."
