First Scotland was blanketed. Now England wakes up to the snow
Kevin Rawlinson
"Snow decorated the public statues and rooftops, the mercury dropped as darkness fell - and much of northern Britain lay under a white carpet, with the South braced for up to 8in (20cm) to fall overnight.
"The snow dropped heavily over Scotland yesterday morning, the snow showers making their way down from Inverness, through the Pennines and reaching Sheffield and Birmingham at lunchtime. Today it is the turn of southern England, with up to 8in predicted to fall on Kent, Norfolk, Suffolk, Sussex and Surrey, and a lighter dusting for London. Snow was also forecast in parts of central and northern England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
"Everywhere will be very cold; temperatures were expected to drop as low as -9C in the Highlands overnight."
