Eric Pickles, the Local Government Secretary, said that Britain should not remain in the EU “at any price” and pledged to cast his vote in the referendum based on his judgment of the “national interest”.The Cabinet minister is thought to be the first to suggest publicly that voters will be offered an “in-out referendum” if the Conservatives win the next election. The Prime Minister is preparing to make a speech next week setting out Britain’s relationship with the EU and is expected to promise a future referendum.
Mr Cameron is expected to set out plans to repatriate some powers from Brussels to Britain – and then give the public a vote on whether they back the new relationship. This is likely to happen in 2017 or 2018.
