It follows widespread frustration among millions of patients over inconvenient opening hours and rising pressure on hospital accident and emergency departments particularly at weekends. A first wave of doctors has volunteered for extended availability for consultations in nine pilot projects in every region from next year, covering around 500,000 patients.Ministers believe the longer hours will eventually be rolled out throughout the NHS in England.
Mr Cameron will unveil a £50million new fund for surgeries to compete for grants by coming up with ideas for improving patient access.
