"The death toll from a blast at a West Virginia coal mine hit 12 Tuesday as rescuers worked frantically to determine the fate of 10 others who were unaccounted for, mining officials said.
"The explosion occurred about 3 p.m. Monday at the Upper Big Branch mine, 30 miles south of Charleston, in Raleigh County.
"Kevin Stricklin, the administrator with the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, said that rescuers had found five bodies Monday night, bringing the death count to 12."
