Concern over budget cut consequences for police
"Wholesale budget cuts without centrally co-ordinated reform risks fragmenting the work of police, the chief officers' leader will say today.
"Sir Hugh Orde called on the new Government to set out its vision for policing across the country in a tightly constrained financial future.
"The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) president said leaving forces to work out savings for themselves will have uneven consequences.
"Sir Hugh said forces may merge units, form joined back-office functions or share expensive equipment but the most efficient changes will be led by Government."
