Britons enjoy longer lives than Americans

"Despite Americans spending almost twice as much per capita on healthcare as the British, life expectancy here is pulling ahead.

"For men life expectancy has been longer here than in America for decades, according to the analysis, published today in the International Journal of Epidemiology. For women, the gap has only really opened up in the last 15 years.

"A baby boy born in Britain in 1970 could expect to live to 68.75 years, while one born in the US the same year could expect to live to 67.02 years - a difference of 1.73 years."
