British troops withdraw from deadly Sangin in Afghanistan

"American and Afghan forces will now take charge in Sangin after British troops handed over control of the area in an official ceremony this morning.

"Britain has suffered its heaviest losses in the Sangin area of Helmand province, which is considered the most perilous military posting in Afghanistan. Of the 337 British servicemen and women killed since the war began in 2001, a third have lost their lives in the area.

"Dr Liam Fox, the defence secretary, announced plans to withdraw from the area in July and 40 Commando Royal Marines officially handed over to the US Marine Corps at 6.30am on Monday."
