Poor standards of teaching will be blamed for tables showing British pupils lagging behind foreign competitors.
Figures to be released will show that education performance in this country has stagnated.
British pupils are falling behind rivals in China and South Korea in subjects such as maths, science and reading, according to league tables.
The results, to be published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, are expected to show that Britain’s performance has stayed stagnant since the last international league tables three years ago.
