"As part of the Coalition agreement a referendum to end the first-past-the-post system will take place on May 5, to coincide with local elections.
"Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, said yesterday that he expected a formal announcement next week. It will place the biggest strain yet on the Coalition with Mr Clegg campaigning for a yes vote but David Cameron opposed to a change to the historic way of electing MPs."
