- Following Frank Lloyd Wright's famous aphorism, "There is no architecture without philosophy", this talk analyses the links and bridges between the fields of architecture and philosophy. Focusing specifically on architecture and hospitality, Klaus Benesch examines the importance of building in American history and outlines the central argument of his next book, Architecture and the Construction of Ideas, which explores the use of architecture by thinkers and philosophers of modernity as a metaphor for their critique of society and capitalism.

- In this talk given at the ENS Lyon, Christine Froula (Northwestern University), author of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Avant-Garde: War, Civilization, Modernity (2005), Modernism's Body: Sex Culture and Joyce (1996) and To Write Paradise: Style and Error in Pound's Cantos (1985), explores the interplay of inherited literary forms and conventions, contingent features of modernity and aesthetic imagination in the forging of the formally innovative modernist poetics of Joyce’s Ulysses (1922), Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (1931), and Ezra Pound’s The Pisan Cantos (1948).

- Udaya Kumar (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) était Professeur invité à l’ENS de Lyon du 12 au 30 octobre 2017 et a donné trois conférences en anglais sur la littérature Dalit du Sud de l’Inde. La première de ces conférences explore la représentation du système de castes dans la littérature Dalit.

L’espace post-apartheid dans les longs métrages de fiction sud-africains, une étude panoramique

- Annael Le Poullennec propose une étude de l'espace sud-africain post-apartheid par l’intermédiaire des films. Après quelques rappels sur l’histoire de la ségrégation en Afrique du Sud et une brève introduction au cinéma sud-africain, elle évoque la problématique de l’espace, à l’échelle nationale et urbaine, dans la réinvention de la nation sud-africaine après la fin de l’Apartheid. Elle s’arrête notamment sur les dichotomies ville/campagne, township/suburb, cloisonnement/ouverture, en insistant sur l’image du déplacement, de l’évolution. Par l’analyse de films tels que Hijack Stories (Oliver Schmitz, 2001), The Wooden Camera (Ntshaveni WaLuruli, 2003), Tsotsi (Gavin Hood, 2005) et White Wedding (Jann Turner, 2009), elle pose les bases de ce qui constitue l’espace post-apartheid cinématographique dans le cinéma de fiction.

Satyajit Ray, ambassadeur de Tagore

- Il y a quelque chose de délicat, subtil, dans l’œuvre du cinéaste Satyajit Ray. Il nous prend par la main et nous invite à pénétrer une culture autre en douceur. On est immédiatement happé par son univers même si la langue et la culture sont distantes. Comment parvient-il à se faire l’ambassadeur de l’Inde en pleine mutation ? On suit ses films de l’intérieur. On est invité à placer notre regard au centre du film et non à l’extérieur, sans pour autant à aucun moment nous identifier aux personnages qui sont totalement autres. On se glisse derrière la caméra, et la lenteur des plans nous permet de nous imprégner de la vie qui se déroule. Les villageois passent le long d’un chemin, les personnages entrent et sortent des plans. Partout, qu’il tourne des scènes d’intérieur ou d’extérieur, le flux de la vie anime l’image...

Pictures Versus the World

For as long as pictures have been among us, they have generated an uneasy mix of suspicion and awe. Perhaps nowhere is that as much the case as with journalism, where pictures are implicated in the larger truth-claims associated with the news. Aligned with a certain version of modernity, pictures are expected to establish and maintain journalism as the legitimate platform for giving shape to events of the real world. Consider how public response to acts of terror, war and natural disaster is affected by decisions not to depict them. Without pictures to show the news, journalism’s capacity to render the real and make it accessible is compromised.

The Language of Gesture: Melville's Imaging of Blackness and the Modernity of Billy Budd

In light of recent studies of both the life of black seamen and of the role of blacks in the Enlightenment, the paper discusses the representation of African sailors in the work of Herman Melville, in particular in his unfinished manuscript Billy Budd, Sailor. As I argue, Melville's imaging of a "noble" black sailor in the opening chapter is crucial to the author's ongoing attempt to untangle the complex relationship of race and modernity. By invoking a non-totalitarian, gestural/visual aesthetics of blackness Melville not only reinforces his earlier critique of modernity's foundation in slavery; he also revivifies and, simultaneously, trans-forms the eighteenth-century tradition of visualizing blacks as tragic witnesses to the para-doxes of the enlightenment. In so doing, Melville couches his argument against racism in a 'gestural' (black) critique of white judgments on blacks that may well be read to foreshadow later, more radical gestures of black pride from zoot-suiters to the raised fists of black pan-thers or the corporeal self-fashioning of the gangster rapper.

Régénération urbaine et événements festifs à Glasgow

Glasgow est parvenue, au cours des 25 dernières années à radicalement modifier son image en organisant des événements festifs d'ampleur nationale ou internationale. Le recours aux arts et à la culture lui a permis de s'adapter aux mutations de l'économie globale et de procéder à la requalification de nombreuses friches industrielles. Le prochain événément d'importance sera l'organisation des Jeux du Commonwealth en 2014. Cet article propose de mettre en lumière les problématiques de la métamorphose de la ville et d'analyser dans quelle mesure les Jeux du Commonwealth s'intègrent dans la stratégie globale de régénération de la ville.
