Martin McGuinness: 'We knew he was for us and would never let us down'

As the pallbearers carried the tricolour-draped coffin to the end of the street where Martin McGuinness lived, and turned left on to the hill that would take him down to the heart of the Bogside, one man standing at the corner began to clap.
Then another, and another, and within a second or two, thousands of people were applauding. As the cortege made its way down to Free Derry Corner, the salute was taken up by tens of thousands more. It was a simple gesture of respect and thanks.
Shops were closed, businesses shuttered and classrooms had been emptied so that the people could mark the passing of their Fior-Taoiseach: a true chieftain.

Martin McGuinness was "not a terrorist" but a "freedom fighter", Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has claimed.
He was speaking at the graveside following the funeral of Mr McGuinness, a former IRA leader turned politician.

Former US president Bill Clinton urged the congregation at the funeral of Martin McGuinness to finish the work of creating a lasting peace in Northern Ireland.
Thousands of people gathered at St Columba’s church in Derry, and on the streets outside, to pay their respects to the former Sinn Féin deputy first minister and ex-IRA commander.
Mr McGuinness’s wife Bernie and children, Gráinne, Fionnuala, Fiachra and Emmet escorted the coffin, draped in a tricolour, out of their house on Westland Terrace on Thursday afternoon. Mr McGuinness (66) died on Tuesday from a rare heart condition.

Prayer service for IRA victims held in Fermanagh

A service of prayer and reflection for victims has taken place in Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh.
Relatives of those killed by the IRA, including in the Enniskillen and Claudy bombs, took part in the service.
Prayers were said by Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist ministers.
