Trump Administration To End Obamacare Subsidies For The Poor
Danielle Krutzleben and Scott Neuman (NPR,0 12/10/2017)
The Trump administration said Thursday that it would end the Affordable Care Act's cost-sharing reduction payments designed to help low-income Americans get health care. Not paying the subsidies, health care experts have warned, could send the health insurance exchanges into turmoil.
The payments, which started under the Obama administration, had been continued by President Trump, despite his strong opposition to the ACA. Congress Can’t Let Mr. Trump Kill Obamacare on His Own
The Editorial Board (The New York Times, 12/10/2017)
Fed up with failed attempts in Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act, President Trump on Thursday took matters into his own hands, signing an executive order that could significantly damage the health insurance market and harm millions of people.
Mr. Trump directed his administration to effectively create an alternative health insurance system that does not include the safeguards of the A.C.A. and could sabotage that 2010 law, one of his predecessor’s biggest accomplishments. The president claims that this will help people obtain cheaper insurance. In reality, it most likely will force insurance companies to abandon the A.C.A.’s insurance exchanges and ultimately precipitate a collapse of an important part of Obamacare.

Trump scraps Obamacare subsidies in surprise late-night announcement
Ed Pilkington and Sabrina Siddiqui (The Guardian, 13/10/2017)

Donald Trump has planted a timebomb under Obamacare, issuing a notice late on Thursday night that scraps vital federal subsidies underpinning the current healthcare system.
The late-night move caught critics off guard and brought immediate accusations that Trump was unilaterally destroying his predecessor’s signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act, after the Republican-controlled Congress failed to secure changes. The announcement stops federal support of up to $7bn (£5.27bn) to insurance companies to help them cover the medical needs of low-income Americans.
