Trump: 'I don't blame China' for taking advantage of US on trade

President Donald Trump lavished praise on China for the very trade practices he once lambasted as unfair during a remarkable morning session in Beijing.
Emerging after two hours of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said he doesn't fault China for taking advantage of differences between the way the two countries do business.
"I don't blame China," Trump said during remarks to business leaders inside the Great Hall of the People. "After all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country for benefit of their citizens? I give China great credit."

Trump Heaps Praise on Xi Jinping and Blames Predecessors for Trade Gaps

President Trump heaped praise on President Xi Jinping of China on Thursday, saying he was confident China would help defuse the threat from North Korea and reduce its trade deficits with the United States, which he blamed on his own predecessors, not the Chinese.
Mr. Trump, speaking in Beijing, called on Mr. Xi to redouble Chinese pressure on the North over its nuclear and missile programs, declaring, “We have it in our power to liberate the world” from the North Korean “menace.”
While the president also vowed to redress chronic trade imbalances, he framed them as a failure of American policy, even saluting Mr. Xi for leading a country that had left the United States “so far behind” and saying he could not blame the Chinese for taking advantage of Americans.

President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping say they have agreed to work together on the denuclearization of North Korea and closer cooperation on trade.
In a joint statement delivered at Beijing's Great Hall of the People with Xi, Trump praised the Chinese president as "a very special man" and earlier, he said the two enjoyed "great chemistry." The Chinese leader emphasized that while the two economic and military giants would occasionally have differences, there were opportunities to be "mutually reinforcing."
Trump is on the third leg of a five-nation visit to Asia. He has already made stops in Japan and South Korea and will also visit Vietnam and the Philippines.

Trump's speech was a little like the Wikipedia page on South Korea

President Donald Trump's speech to South Korea's National Assembly had its special touches. He could not pass up the opportunity to mention his election victory and to plug one of his golf courses. But in total, Wednesday's speech was somewhat staid, at times sounding like he was reading the Wikipedia page on South Korea.
Trump managed not to insult South Korean President Moon Jae-in or the Korean people. More importantly, he did not directly threaten nuclear war with North Korea or threaten to withdraw US forces from the Korean Peninsula.
He reaffirmed the US-South Korean alliance, albeit without the standard "ironclad" language, and he said, "I know that the Republic of Korea, which has become a tremendously successful nation, will be a faithful ally of the United States very long into the future," without saying that the reverse would also be true. So, measured by the admittedly low standard of not saying something that might trigger war and risk millions of lives, the speech was one of Trump's best.
