Teachers take to the streets as thousands go on strike nationwide

About 50,000 primary, secondary and kindergarten teachers are on strike, calling for more resources to do their jobs and pay rises that keep pace with inflation.

The strikes were organised by the Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA) and New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) after talks with the Ministry of Education stalled.

Teacher strike: Education Minister told to 'walk the talk' by booing protesters

The Education Minister was booed and told to do her job by striking teachers – an awkward position for the former principal and NZEI union board member, who spent years on the side of teachers during times of protest.

Jan Tinetti acknowledge it was “probably pretty tough fronting up” to the protest on Thursday, “but it's something that I was absolutely determined to do because our teachers matter”.

Hundreds of Northland teachers take to the streets for day of strike action

Hundreds of Northland school teachers are joining around 50,000 of their colleagues on strike today after rejecting the latest offer from the Ministry of Education to settle their collective pay agreements.

Around 50,000 kindergarten, primary school, area school and high school teachers and principals are involved in today’s industrial action with thousands taking to the streets across the country to show their opposition to the pay offer.
