The Globe is streaming a Shakespeare play for free every fortnight (and 34 foreign-language productions)

The latest London theatre to step up to the plate with free high-quality content is Shakespeare’s Globe. The iconic Elizabethan-style playhouse already had its own public streaming platform in the form of Globe Player, but watching it has always come at a fairly steep rate, with productions rented or purchased at individual prices that usually exceed a month’s full access to many TV streaming platforms. As of next Monday (April 6), that changes.

First up is a full English-language Shakespeare play per fortnight available for free. The line-up kicks off with 2018’s ‘Hamlet’, starring Globe boss Michelle Terry in the title role of the doomed Danish prince.

Shakespeare's Globe to release six productions online to watch for free, including Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet

Shakespeare’s Globe will put six of its productions online to watch for free while the theatre is closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.​

Plays including Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be available to stream at the Globe’s on-demand service for free starting from April 6, with the films rotating every two weeks.

Also among the theatre's newly announced digital offering are a series of short films featuring an all-star cast that were made to commemorate 400 years since Shakespeare's death, and a new online series featuring Sandi Toksvig .

Shakespeare's Globe to release 40 free productions as part of new digital content offering

Shakespeare's Globe will release 40 productions on its Globe Player service for free, it has been announced.

The shows are Hamlet starring artistic director Michelle Terry (2018), Romeo and Juliet with Ellie Kendrick and Adetomiwa Edun (2009), A Midsummer Night's Dream with Michelle Terry (2013), The Winter's Tale with Annette Badland (2018), The Two Noble Kinsmen with Brian Dick (2018) and The Merry Wives of Windsor (2019) with Bryony Hannah. All Globe Player productions are captioned, with each show presented for two weeks on a rolling cycle from 6 April.

Coronavirus: Shakespeare’s Globe announces digital programme for isolation

Shakespeare’s Globe has unveiled a programme of work to take place while its building is closed, including a new digital series, free on-demand productions and educational content for home schooling.

Digital content made available for audiences will comprise a series of Shakespeare performances, recorded in isolation by artists including Sandi and Jenifer Toksvig and Kathryn Hunter, and a programme of free-to-watch productions via the theatre’s on-demand platform, Globe Player.
