The Shadow Chancellor used his keynote speech to the Labour conference in Brighton to promise that a “mansion tax” will be slapped on large properties if the party wins the next election.He said an annual levy on homes worth £2million or more would pay for reintroducing the 10p income tax rate for low-income earners.
But critics said a mansion tax would only raise £1.5billion a year towards a total of £7billion needed to fund the income tax cut. Tory sources said more modest properties, worth as little as £415,000, would be caught by the tax.
