University funding slashed by £940 million

"University budgets for the next academic year will be 12.6 per cent lower than those initially proposed for 2010-11, though this year's grants were also cut by £190 million last month.

"Newer universities are likely to be hardest hit, prompting fears that they could resort to charging higher-than-anticipated tuition fees or drop courses to make up the shortfall.

"A large slice of the £940 million cuts will fall on capital spending projects such as new buildings, but grants for teaching and research will plunge by an average of 4.1 per cent across the country."
