U.S. Envoy Calls North Korean Rights Record ‘Appalling’

"SEOUL A senior American diplomat assailed the North Korean government Monday for its appalling record on human rights, as Pyongyang continued to hold a U.S. citizen for illegal entry.

"It's one of the worst places in terms of lack of human rights, said Robert R. King, President Barack Obama's envoy on North Korean human rights issues, after his meeting in Seoul with the South Korean foreign minister, Yu Myung-hwan. The situation is appalling.

"At his Senate confirmation hearing in November, Mr. King called North Korea one of the worst abusers of human rights in the world."
